Chlorfenapyr belongs to the pyrrole class. Unlike neurotoxic insecticides that target ion channels or synaptic transmission, chlorfenapyr is a pro-insecticide. Once metabolized inside the mosquito, cytochrome P450 enzymes convert it into CL 303268. This active metabolite enters the mitochondria and uncouples oxidative phosphorylation, halting ATP production. The vector dies of cellular metabolic exhaustion without exhibiting cross-resistance to conventional pyrethroids.

Conducted by trained collector pairs operating in shifts from 18:00 to 06:00, HLC establishes hourly biting rhythms, indoor vs. outdoor biting ratios (endophagy vs. exophagy), and when paired with laboratory CSP-ELISA, the Entomological Inoculation Rate (EIR). Collectors receive regular malaria screening and prophylactic coverage.

Historically, malaria transmission in sub-Saharan Africa has been predominantly rural, driven by Anopheles gambiae and An. funestus. The invasion of Anopheles stephensi fundamentally alters this paradigm: this vector thrives in clean man-made water containers across dense urban environments (overhead tanks, cisterns, tires). Its detection across coastal West Africa requires cross-border surveillance and a transition towards urban larval source management.
